The DC movie brand is struggling at the box office ever since Justice League, albeit with a couple of exceptions. While Aquaman’s box office performance suggested that the DCEU would move on from Justice League just fine, subsequent releases like Shazam! and Birds of Prey went for a different approach and tried to deliver smaller films in terms of budget. Some of DC’s main characters – including Batman and Superman – began to stay away from the big screen, leading to questions of whether another Justice League movie would even happen. The Flash's story is quite expansive per director Andy Muschietti, with Muschietti saying, "It's inclusive in the sense that it is saying all that you've seen exists, and everything that you will see exists, in the same unified multiverse." That makes The Flash's nod to the missile scene Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice more clear as a multiversal tribute. The Flash could very well have far more such alternate universe takes on big moments from other past and contemporary DC movies, as well.
